Rio Secco Golf Club’s second hole presents incredibly scenic views of the Las Vegas strip below that will leave you breathless. Take it all in – it’s an amazing view – but you’d be wise to give yourself a moment to gather your thoughts and reset your eyes back to the fairway because the most scenic hole at Rio Secco Golf Club is also the toughest on property.
An elevated tee box tucked in around gorgeous residential properties gives way to a downhill tee shot, which will test your mettle. Trust your line – which is right of the fairway bunkers to the left – as a player’s sight line is blind to the best landing area for birdie. The dogleg is framed high on the left with a steep hill and the fairway slopes left to right, which gives too-strong tee shots a chance to crawl back into the fairway. But the continued slope down to arroyos on the right means big scores if you bite off a little too much off the tee.
Less than driver off the tee can still leave a mid-iron into a green heavily guarded by bunkers long and to the right, and finding the sand on approach will leave a tricky up and down for par. The smart play is to carve a baby-fade at the left side of this large green, which, much like the hole itself, slopes gently from left to right.
Par is a good score on No. 2 and won’t be too difficult if you play it smart and execute your shot. But if you insist on driver off the tee, you’ll have to wait to see if you’ve found the fairway, and by then, it might be too late to make par.
